The Last of Us Part I - Meeting Ellie Cinematic Lighting

This is a selection of shots where Joel and Ellie first met.
I am the Cinematic Lighting Artist for this real-time cutscene.

For this scene, we opted for a softer, warmer light filtering through the windows compared to the original, creating a more intimate atmosphere while keeping the characters enigmatic. I approached the lighting as if staging a theatrical performance, using key lights to highlight the main actions—much like following a lead performer on stage.

At the same time, maintaining a sense of realism was essential. I adjusted the lighting for each shot, ensuring every detail served the narrative context.

We also dedicated significant effort to enhancing the atmosphere with dust particles, a subtle yet beautiful touch that adds depth to the scene. A special thanks to our FX artist, Slim Ghariani, for his outstanding work in bringing this detail to life.

The lighting for the room behind Joel (gameplay level) was actually re-adjusted to feel more consistent with the hideout room. (much darker)

Exaggerated light intensity on Joel to focus on his reaction of avoiding eye contact with Ellie.
